Definition of Terms:
1. Oxygen Consumption (VO2) – the amount of oxygen the body can use for the production of energy. This is one of the common parameters measured in exercise physiology to estimate the energy cost of an activity. The higher the VO2, the more energy that is being used. While there are ways to estimate this value it can only be measured using a metabolic cart.
2. Maximal Oxygen Consumption (VO2max) – the maximal amount of oxygen a person can use. This value is used to determine how cardio-vascularly fit and individual is. Usually expressed in ml×kg-1×min-1 (militers of oxygen per kilogram body weight per minute) Average values for college aged males range around 40 ml×kg-1×min-1 .
